Making complex systems more visible.

The core of the Digital Space Lab  —

A research space for orientation in complex situations.

The Digital Space Lab investigates how relationships, structures and knowledge environments shape what we can understand about complex economic, digital and technological systems. 


The work combines network research, digital methods, systemic analysis and artificial intelligence with a broader question:


How can we remain oriented when complexity cannot simply be reduced away?


Research and client work remain distinct — but inform one another where the question and evidence justify it.

RESEARCH & PRACTICE

Two distinct fields. One shared perspective.  


Independent inquiry and client work remain separate at Digital Space Lab.


Research develops concepts, methods and perspectives for understanding complex systems. Client projects begin with a concrete situation, available evidence and an actual decision that needs to be made.


The connection lies in the perspective: both begin by asking what must be understood before conclusions, interventions or solutions are fixed.


Research can expand the perspective. It does not prescribe the answer.

FRAMEWORKS

Long-term questions and evolving frameworks.

Some questions cannot be resolved within a single project. They require sustained inquiry, conceptual development and repeated examination across different contexts. The Digital Space Lab develops longer-term frameworks around orientation, artificial intelligence and relational systems.

EPISTHEON

Orientation when coherent answers are not enough.


 Epistheon is an epistemic architecture concerned with the relationships between explanation, orientation, uncertainty, limits and responsibility. It asks what happens when convincing explanations are available, but the conditions required for responsible orientation remain incomplete — a problem that becomes increasingly relevant in knowledge environments shaped by artificial intelligence.

TANGLED WEBS

Following the relationships behind the economy.


Products, brands and companies rarely exist in isolation. Behind them are production relationships, ownership structures, corporate networks and dependencies that are often difficult to see from the surface. Tangled Webs investigates these connections and develops methods and data for making economic relationships, concentration, dependency and responsibility more visible.

SELECTED PROJECTS

A longer trajectory of relational research.

For more than 15 years, Harald Meier's work has explored how relationships can reveal structures that remain difficult to see when actors, organizations or events are examined in isolation. Two projects illustrate this trajectory particularly well.

THE NETWORKED BUNDESTAG

Mapping political structures through social media networks.


This project explored the Twitter networks of members of the German Bundestag. Rather than examining individual accounts in isolation, the analysis focused on relationships between political actors, parties and emerging online communities. Network analysis revealed patterns of proximity, separation, clustering and political communication that were difficult to recognize from individual posts or profiles alone.  This work was presented at research and data-journalism events including GOR, GIJC and SciCAR.

EXPLORE BUNDESTAG NETWORKS

EPISTEMIC BOUNDARIES OF LLMS

How far can generated coherence support reliable orientation?


This collaborative project examines the epistemic limits of large language models. It explores the relationship between generated coherence, available evidence and uncertainty — and asks under which conditions LLM outputs can provide a sufficient basis for understanding, orientation and responsible action.  A particular focus lies on situations in which apparent reasoning, synthesis or derivation may extend beyond what the underlying evidence actually supports.


Collaborative Project · In Development

HYPERLINK GEOGRAPHIES

Mapping global civil society through digital relationships.


This work examines the hyperlink networks of international NGOs and the geographical structures emerging from their digital relationships. By combining geography, network analysis and digital methods, the project investigates how global civil society organizes, connects and represents itself across the web. It also raises a broader methodological question:


What can digital relationships reveal about structures that are simultaneously social, spatial and organizational?

Technological change, global connectivity and increasingly dense information flows are accelerating the environments in which we live and make decisions. Artificial intelligence marks a new stage in this development.


The talk moves from everyday experiences — supermarkets, smartphones and social media — to the less visible systems behind them: global supply chains, digital infrastructures, data flows, platforms, algorithms, economic interests and structures of power. At its center is a broader question:


How can we recognize the structures behind accelerating change — and remain capable of orientation and action under conditions of growing complexity and uncertainty?
